Adult Driving Classes

Becoming aN Adult Licensed Driver

If you are 21 years or older, the following are the steps to becoming a licensed driver in DC.

1. You must obtain a learner’s permit before getting a DC driver’s license if you do not hold a valid license from another jurisdiction. DC residents are eligible to apply for a learner’s permit upon passing the eye test and knowledge exam (Learner’s Permit Test), which tests knowledge of traffic laws, road signs and driving safety rules. It determines whether you are prepared to operate a vehicle in accordance with DC law. (If you are 70 years or older you must have your physician complete the certification on the driver’s license application and pass the eye test.) A valid learner’s permit is required for driving instruction at CAS Driving School. A learner’s permit is valid for one year for US citizens and may vary for non-US citizens (according to the US immigration expiration date).

2. Once your skill level reaches a point where you can safely drive a car, you are ready to take the road test. Passing the road test is required to qualify for a DC driver’s license.

More Information about Drivers

If you are 21 years or older, getting a driver’s license is about more than learning to drive a car. At CAS Driving School, our goal is to help every person we teach to be a safe and competent driver. We understand there’s no shortage of worry (and stress) for adults learning to drive for the first time. That’s why at CAS Driving School graduating safe, responsible and competent drivers is our number one priority.

In order to begin driving instruction with CAS Driving School, you must have a valid learner’s permit. All of our instruction is conducted behind the wheel in the District of Columbia.

If your teen is between 16 and 20 years old (or you are), we focus our driving instruction on the following:
  • Vehicle control skills
  • Learning to drive defensively
  • Driving at night and in inclement weather
  • The importance of wearing seat belts
  • Avoiding distracted driving
  • How to respond to peer pressure
