If you are 21 years or older, the following are the steps to becoming a licensed driver in
.
1. You must obtain a learner’s permit before getting a DC driver’s license if you do not hold a valid license from another jurisdiction. DC residents are eligible to apply for a learner’s permit upon passing the eye test and knowledge exam (Learner’s Permit Test), which tests knowledge of traffic laws, road signs and driving safety rules. It determines whether you are prepared to operate a vehicle in accordance with DC law. (If you are 70 years or older you must have your physician complete the certification on the driver’s license application and pass the eye test.) A valid learner’s permit is required for driving instruction
at CAS Driving School. A learner’s permit is valid for one year for US citizens and may vary for non-US citizens (according to the US immigration expiration date).
2. Once your skill level reaches a point where you can safely drive a car, you are ready to take the road test. Passing the road test is required to qualify for a DC driver’s license.
